His uncle is salsa singer Hector Lavoe, who was active in Fania All-Stars and other bands, and he grew up in a musically blessed environment, starting his DJ career in his early teens. In 1990, he formed the unit "Masters at Work" with Kenny Dope, and worked as a producer on the works of Queen Latifah, Gloria Estefan, and others, and also released an album under the name "Nuyorican Soul".
